Nearly 80% of apartment tenants in the US have made full or partial payments this month, but many are paying by credit card.

Despite the solid headline figures, the increased proportion of payments by credit card is seen as a worrying sign that financial strain is growing as federal aid dries up.

The NMHC data include 11.5m professionally-managed apartment units. They exclude smaller properties, which may be suffering greater distress.
